What Is A Sleep Test Or Sleep Study?

A sleep test is a study performed in a sleep lab or at home to evaluate sleep apnea and other disorders. The test is usually ordered to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. However, other sleep disorders may be diagnosed with the sleep test. An in- laboratory sleep study is also called polysomnography or PSG. Home Sleep Test (HST) have recently become more utilized. Home sleep test are used exclusively for looking at obstructive sleep apnea.
Sleep Tests measure the following biologic parameters:
Nasal and Oral Airflow – by thin wire that is taped by the nose and mouth – some sensors look like an oxygen cannula.
Respiratory Effort – by elastic belt bands that are placed across the chest and abdomen.
Oxygenation – a small clip-like device that attaches to the finger tip and emits a red light that assists in the evaluation of oxygen levels in the blood
